About Paul Debevec

http://debevec.org

Paul Debevec is the associate director of graphics research at the University of Southern California's Institute for Creative Technologies (USC ICT) and a research associate professor in USC's Department of Computer Science. His Ph.D. thesis at UC Berkeley presented Facade, an image-based modeling and rendering system for creating photoreal virtual cinematography of architectural scenes from photographs. Using Facade he led the creation of a photoreal animation of the Berkeley campus for his 1997 film "The Campanile Movie" whose techniques were later used to create virtual backgrounds for the "The Matrix"; he went on to demonstrate new image-based lighting techniques in his animations "Rendering with Natural Light", "Fiat Lux", and "The Parthenon". Debevec led the design of HDR Shop, the first widely used high dynamic range image editing program and co-authored the recent book "High Dynamic Range Imaging". Debevec received ACM SIGGRAPH's Significant New Researcher Award in 2001 and recently chaired the SIGGRAPH 2007 Computer Animation Festival. He has been speaking at many conferences around the globe. Most recently he was an invited speaker at fmx08 in Stuttgart/Germany.

George Lucas SIGGRAPH 2005 Conference Keynote Q&A

ACM SIGGRAPH Perth is proud to present the SIGGRAPH 2005 Conference Keynote Q&A of world-renowned director, producer, and screenwriter George Lucas.

"Lucas' remarkable storytelling and cinematic technical achievements have awed and inspired the computer graphics community for more than 30 years," said James L. Mohler, SIGGRAPH 2005 Conference Chair from Purdue University.

Lucas is the creator of the phenomenally successful Star Wars saga and Indiana Jones series, and the themes of his films underscore his own firm belief that the individual has boundless potential, and can overcome any limitations. While these themes are strong in his early films, "THX 1138" (1971) and "American Graffiti" (1973), it was Lucas' third film, 1977's "Star Wars" that changed everything. An epic tale of good versus evil told across a fantastic landscape of exotic planets and bizarre creatures, "Star Wars" became an international phenomenon. Refusing to accept the limitations of filmmaking at the time, Lucas created his own visual effects company, Industrial Light & Magic, to deliver the more than 300 shots required to make his vision a reality. Source

In this 50 minute DVD screening, Lucas discusses technological innovation, the challenges and opportunities facing digital film makers, digital education and the future of digital film making and interactive techniques.

Abstract

In 1977, George Lucas's Star Wars opened our eyes and blasted our senses with brave new worlds, remarkable characters, and operatic battles. In the five films that followed, these images continued to make cinematic history, taking us places we never thought possible and blazing the trail for the visual effects and animation industry.

In this presentation, three ILM legends, Dennis Muren, John Knoll and Rob Coleman walk us through all six instalments in the series, comparing the techniques that ILM employed over the years to bring these historical environments, characters and space battles to the big screen.

This informative talk features rare "behind the scenes" video and imagery from the production of the Star Wars series. From puppets to cinematography, pre-vis to photo realistic digital characters, this rich material provides a unique perspective on the past, present and future of Cinema Visual Effects.

Paul Bourke : Novel projection environments

Paul's Website

Image Gallery of Dome Installations

Paul Bourke will present and discuss a number of the more unusual projection environments he has either developed or been involved with. This will include VROOM (the Virtual ROOM) at the Melbourne Museum, a 360 degree stereoscopic cylinder at iCinema in Sydney, planetarium domes including a buckyball dome at GinGin, and some smaller more personal immersive environments. Applications of such environments include visualisation, engaging spaces for education, entertainment, and gaming. Some discussion will also be given to what application or game developers need to do in order to create content for such environments.

Biography

Paul Bourke is employed as a visualisation researcher at the University of Western Australia providing scientific visualisation services to researchers within university and externally. During his career he has worked in organisations where he concentrated on architectural, brain/medical, and recently astronomy visualisation. One of his many interests are innovative and immersive display technologies and how they may be used to enhance scientific visualisation as well as support engaging exhibits in public spaces and for education. An ongoing interest has been how to create immersive environments at a lower price point in an attempt to remove one barrier to their wider deployment.

Regular Meeting Details

Anyone with an interest in computer graphics and interactive technology is welcome to attend. Meetings have a friendly, informal atmosphere. We encourage people to make announcements, ask for help with projects, discuss useful tools and tricks and describe interesting things you've seen to other attendees. You can also speak to the organisers of ACM SIGGRAPH Perth there if you have any questions.

Most regular, monthly meetings are free to all comers. For other events such as screenings, we often have a cover charge to meet our costs and help subsidise other ACM SIGGRAPH Perth activities. Financial members of ACM SIGGRAPH Perth get free or discounted admission to such events. Membership is available at all events if you'd like to join (membership information).

Meetings are usually held on the first Monday of every month at 6.30 PM. We normally meet in the theatrette at eCentral, Central TAFE, 140 Royal St, East Perth. However, we sometimes hold meetings at other venues and dates when presenters incorporate tours of their facilities or we have a popular screening session. The easiest way to stay informed is to join our email list.

Regular meetings normally consist of a series of presentations ranging in length from 2-30 minutes. Longer presentations tend to be prearranged, but we welcome people with news and examples of their work to make spontaneous contributions at the meetings. After the meeting we usually adjourn to a cafe, restaurant or pub.

Interested in being a future presenter?

If you'd like to present something at a future meeting, post an article in our online community (free, but registration required) or contact the organisers. We welcome contributions from both members and non-members. We usually have a short segment at the end of each meeting where people can make announcements (gallery openings, software or DVD releases, interesting web sites you saw). You don't need to contact us for that, although we do encourage you to post such things in the online community so the people who can't attend the meetings see them too.
